Recruiting on the College Campus

how to succeed

Pic by Thomas Dwyer

With the struggle many students are seeing in trying to find a job after graduation, non profits can help them out by coming to the students.  If you have some free time and some of your employees who would like to help, you can go around to local colleges and universities an recruit at their career fairs.  There really isn’t much too it.  If you are looking for employees this is a great place to start.  No only will it help you out but it can help out soon to be college grads who may not know about the non profit sector or that your company is hiring.  By recruiting at the college or university you are helping your own company and college students all at the same time.

Nonprofits making inroads with the new generation of employees are finding more successes and a means to have the talent to grow.

Congress is on notice

Oic by Geek & Poke

Nonprofit employees just might turn out the lights of some in congress if they get this wrong.

Half of all Americans already get their health through the government.  It is called Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the poor.

Health care reform to be beneficial for most businesses including the nonprofit community needs to accomplish one goal, afforable health care for all.

All other policy issues are a means to distract from the real goal and wastes valuable time.  The Health Care debate has and will continue to provide plenty of learning material on how to redirect a debate, redistribute wealth and create an  ever lastingly impact.

Nonprofits still have time to move the debate in their favor of creating affordable health care for their employees, their business model and allow the nonprofit to continue to concentrate on their mission.

Write your elected Congressional Officials and tell them as an employer how health care costs effect your mission and how you personally have been effected by health care cost.

Where did all the non profits go?

Question?

That’s the question to be asking as a college student on today’s college campus. It seems that all of the companies and forms of business that are being pushed on the college campuses are all from the for profit sector. This can prove to be quite a problem for today’s generation of people that are graduating college and moving on to the work force. From personal experience, it seems that I have not really heard anything about the non profit sector while in school, and to drive the point home even more, almost all of the companies at career fairs are from the for profit sector. This means that college age students are not getting to see what this area of the work world is like. For some, they may not even know that it exists out there. Now not only does this hurt the students by limiting their chances for jobs, but it also hurts the non profits by not introducing new employees to them. By having the majority of colleges not introduce non profits to their students, it is creating a problem that is going to be huge in about ten to fifteen years. I urge the people of today to go out their and try and do something about it.

what is the lingo

pic by J3concept

I’m proud to say the only three abbreviations I have ever used on facebook and AOL instant messenger are TTYL, LOL, and OMG. Being twenty one, you would think I would know more of the text lingo.  I’m glad I’ve never heard of these abbreviations before reading an article from the Wall Street Journal: KUTGW, LMIRL, or IWSN. Did  you know that LMIRL stands for Lets meet in real life? Give me a break, why not just say LM? Lets meet.  Do people really use these abbreviations?

Let us know if you’re on the band wagon or not.

Career and Health Care Search

Been laid off yet? If not, theres a good chance you know someone who has been “let go.” Today its becoming increasingly difficult to find a job in this scarce and slow market, and even more difficult to find decent health care. Some people are trying a different route. This Boston Blobe article focuses on volunteering at a nonprofit while unemployed so one can work on and polish their skills. With the slow job market you should do whatever you can to gain experience, plus it beefs up your resume for future opportunities. Volunteering could also help with a career change.

On the health care side, the Boston Globe posted an article today explaining how companies are paying health care for 27,000 unemployed MA residents, and how if the tax is raised, it will sink the businesses. The state’s Medical Security Program is financed solely by a tax on employers. In 2006, another health care program was started that is not run by the Medical Security Program. (Health Connector System)
It doesn’t make much sense in running two programs that do the same thing. The programs should be merged together and the tax should be kept the same, considering it hasn’t been changed since 1990.

The Smartest Choice for a Healthy future

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

From The Wall Street Journal:

The government is not taking our privledge to living a healthy life away because of the health care reform. The whole purpose of Obama’s health care plan is to provide all citizens of the US affordable health care. America was built on the idea of choice. And living a healthy life is the smartest choice we can make for our familys future and our country’s.

Making Decisions without the Facts

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

What I’d really like to know is the actual terms and benefits the proposed federal health insurance coverage will provide to citizens. There has been much speculation over how citizens will leave their employer’s health coverage for federal health coverage since it will be so much cheaper. But with a cheaper coverage, are people really getting the same benefits as private insurance companies offer? Before we all decide to go for the cheaper coverage the White House needs to come up with a coverage plan. Maybe by that time people will see that the federal plan isn’t nearly as good as the one they have now.

Let us know your opinion.

A Team of Doctors for Little Old You

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

From the Wall Street Journal:

President Obama supports the teamwork environment that doctors of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio work in on a daily basis. Rather than having doctors work independently, thus increasing costs, the Cleveland Clinic has doctors from the same speciality collaborate together to figure out the best treatments for patients.

In a perfect medical world, patients wouldn’t need to pay for second opinions they’d be told them by the group of doctors working to help them get better, no extra fees.

Option to save

pic by reslifephoto

Whether one thinks of their work as volunteering a little planning in picking the right nonprofit or school or government entity just might increase ones discretionary spending.

If you are going to work for a local nonprofit, state agency or public school that meets the cancellation criteria for student loans make sure you get a deferment so that you do not payout for a loan that is going to be cancelled.

Federal Perkins, Defense and National Direct Student Loan (NDSL) Deferment and Cancellation Option.

Have noted below just one part about the cancellation.  Check out the web link for more specific information.

What is cancellation?

Cancellation rewards individuals who perform certain types of public service or are employed in certain occupations. For each complete year of service, a percentage of the loan may be canceled. The total percentage of the loan that can be canceled depends on the type of service performed—in some cases 100% of a loan may be canceled. You cannot receive a refund of money you paid toward a loan even if you were eligible, or eventually become eligible, to cancel that portion of the loan.

Do I qualify for cancellation?

Depending on the type of loan you have, and when that loan was borrowed, you may be eligible to cancel part or all of your loan if you have served as a:

1. Volunteer in the Peace Corps or an ACTION program (including VISTA) Teacher
2. Member of the U.S. Armed Forces (serving in an area of hostilities)
3. Nurse or medical technician
4. Law enforcement or corrections officer
5. Head Start worker
6. Child or family services worker
7. Professional provider of early intervention services

If a loan defaults and has been accelerated, an individual loses his or her eligibility for cancellation for services performed on or after the date of acceleration.
