National HIV Non-Profit Announces New Name

The announcement on World AIDS Day coincides with the start of a campaign to promote the organization’s new vision and expanded capabilities and reach.“HealthHIV clearly, quickly and easily states our mission and reason for being,” said HealthHIV Executive Director Brian Hujdich. “HealthHIV’s logo reflects the evolving healthcare environment and the essential integration of HIV into the primary care setting, significantly changing and broadening the way we approach HIV as a chronic disease. Payless ShoeSource Announces International Non-Profit Partners to Join Payless Gives(TM) Shoes 4 Kids Holiday Giving Program

Nonprofit honored for ‘encore’ career program

Nonprofit consortium to raise funds lost from United Way

Photo by: Tony the MisfitSeven venerable non-profits have formed an unusual way of fundraising in response to last years loss of support of the United Way.  These non-profits have formed a joint marketing campaign looking to raise lost funds.  They are working under the name GivePhilly and have a website were donors are able to contribute.  Their website is http://givephilly.org/.  The organizations that make up GivePhilly are the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia, The Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America, The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia, Settlement Music School, Travelers Aid of Philadelphia, United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia and Vicinity, and the YMCA of Philadelphia.To read the entire article, please follow the hyperlink to the philly.com web-page.

Nonprofit company makes its owners wealthy

Photo by: eszterWhen operating a business making a hefty salary is what many people dream about, and a California couple did just that.  Edward Dawson started his business in 1978 and he and his wife Marcia built it into the $63 million a year business it is today.  Over the past five years the couple have earned more than $7 million in salary and deferred compensation.  The problem that arises is that these two collect their wealth from operating a nonprofit funded by taxpayer dollars.  They have been able to secure this money by squeezing by and barely playing by the nonprofit laws that are out there.  A bigger question to ask when looking at this is how morally right is what they are doing.To read the entire article, please follow the hyper link to the Los Angeles Times web-page.

Nonprofit group comes to homeless family’s aid

A 97 year old woman and her two sons, both in there sixties have been living in a battered 1973 Chevy Suburban in Venice, California ever since they lost their house in Palm Springs.  But a story published last Friday let L.A. County officials and a nonprofit called Integrated Recovery Network to step up and help.  They have now found all three temporary housing in the California Villa Retirement Hotel in Van Nuys.  Permanent residence and support is being worked on for the three.

Cherished Berkshires theater troupe imperiled

Add another non profit theatre group to the list ladies and gentlemen.  This economic downturn has affected everyone but it seems the arts especially hard.  The Lenox, Mass theatre troupe has been the latest theatre to experience serious financial troubles.  It’s problems are so bad that it would need to raise $2.3 million just to make it to March.  They may not even be able to make their payroll for the month.  The problem leaks back to a $4.75 million deficit over the last five years and their liabilities out way their assets by a ration of almost seven to one.  Other theatre companies to go under have been the Beverly, Mass based North Shore Music Theatre and the Boston, Mass Up You Mighty Race Company.

District Suspends Referrals To Nonprofit’s Group Homes

A Washington D.C. area non profit, Individual Development Inc., is in trouble with the government.  The District of Columbia is halting referrals to them after they took them to court earlier in the week over health and safety concerns of two of the nonprofit’s homes for the mentally disabled.  This action was taken as a result of an on going concern with the non profit’s facilities.

Bainbridge Island nonprofit gets $387K grant to aid Ethiopia

Non Profit Global Team for Local Initiatives received a $387,000 grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development to create clean water and sanitation programs in Ethiopia.  This grant will allow the nonprofit to deliver hygiene training, wells and cisterns to around 3,000 people in Ethiopia.  This is something that is going to hopefully help the huge lack of clean water in this country.
